Meet Tedd Neenan of Aroma Workshop in Lincoln Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tedd Neenan.

Tedd, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My hometown, Columbia, MO, had a shop called the Potion Parlor where a master perfumer created scents. I was fascinated that there could be such a business. I hung around often to watch him work with clients, never thinking I would someday be doing the same thing.

My interest in dance lead me to the Boston Conservatory of Music and Dance where I earned a BFA in 1979 as a scholarship student. My 80’s were spent in New York working with several post-modern choreographers, living in rent-controlled apartments, enjoying museums, opera, Central Park and being part of the avant-garde dance scene.
Back in Missouri my brother and his spouse acquired the Potion Parlor and in 1990 asked me to help them open a second shop in St. Louis. Gracefully retiring from “the boards”, I began my journey into all things aromatic.

After launching two shops in St. Louis I had the itch to start one of my own which coincided with me marrying Liz Muckley, a Chicago actor. 1993 saw the launch of Aroma Workshop in Lincoln Park where we remain in our original location. We’ve had 25 lovely years to learn how to give customers an exciting experience that continues as they share their new scent with the world. I have been allowed to continue my studies in Essential Oils, developing therapeutic blends for dermatologists, spas and physical therapists. The shop has trained over 50 perfumers, created over 27,000 Signature Scents for individuals and prides itself in providing a fun experience for anyone that visits us.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No bank in their right minds are going to lend money to a fragrance shop. After several tries, we found a crazy loan officer (female) and we were off.

No profits for three years, but Liz and I both knew how to live cheap and she was able to book the random commercial so we did not starve.

9/11 and The Great Recession were very hard on retail, Aroma Workshop included. Laying off perfumers, selling down inventory, relying more on my spouse’s income lead to me questioning the sanity of continuing with this business that I love so much. We figured I could always work at Costco.

We took a lickin’, but we’re still kickin’!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Aroma Workshop story. Tell us more about the business.
We create Signature Scents for individuals and companies. In addition, we create blends with Essential Oils from plants that have therapeutic properties. I am most proud of the way our shop is embraced by the folks that visit us.
I am equally proud of the Perfumers that practice here, the care and professionalism they exhibit is consistently selfless. Where do you find that?

I think our commitment to ensure that anyone who comes here is treated royally sets us apart from the majority of retail experience.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Bad luck can help us refine our purpose, commitment and moral fiber. We can see what strengths are necessary to maintain so that we are not knocked back by bits of bad news.

Good Luck sustains the spirit, allows room for ingenuity and reminds us that it’s better to give than to receive. When we are gone that’s all folks will remember about us anyway.
